Great points.
You touched on the fact that Syria is Not the Assad Syria that used to be.
The government side is now made out of the old Alawi group, supported by Shia groups from Irak, Iran and lebanon. And some smaller minorities.
The change on the government side is as deep as the change on the rebel side from local to more extreme, foreign and fragmented groups.
Even if the war ended this evening, the influence of Shia groups of Irakis, Iranians, Lebanese etc. is not likely to go away.
Something new is growing in syria that was not there before.
